Both north and southbound lanes were temporarily shut down on Oct. 24, where there was a reported crash with multiple vehicles involved that resulted in several cars and a truck being torched.

The crash was reported between exit 110 and exit 104 at the mile marker 108 in Caroline County, resulting in traffic being backed up in both direction for several miles.

Several vehicles were destroyed. Only one minor injury was reported

Traffic signals along the Route 1 corridor in both Caroline and Spotsylvania counties were adjusted to reduce congestion, according to the DOT.

Drivers with destinations south of the Fredericksburg area should use Route 301 or the most convenient alternate route, they added

Northbound lanes were reopened amid the ongoing cleanup, but DOT officials cautioned that there will be "major" delays for travelers heading southbound on the interstate through the afternoon rush as they continue clearing the scene and investigating the crash.

Once the trucks are removed, VDOT crews will be able to assess the pavement condition and guardrail damage then determine repair plans, officials said. There is no reopening time available.
